Abiogenesis

2026

David Stout

Abiogenesis is a widely accepted theory that life began through a non-organic molecular process prior to biogenesis. This plausible theory supported by various scientific hypotheses has not been definitively observed in a laboratory environment and remains part of the larger mystery of the creation of life. In this print series I explore the visual similarities between mineral and bio-organic cellular structures. In some instances, these forms appear to be embedded in rock suggesting the possibility of a meteor carrying life to earth from another celestial source. This concept is known as Panspermia. Other images juxtapose these crystalline forms upon beds of sand-like particles or perhaps within the veins of a granular cellular fluid. The series as a whole becomes an abstraction where the depicted scale remains ambiguous. Is this the unfolding of distant galactic constellation or an interior world deep within the viscera of a living, breathing lifeform? Wherever the viewer chooses to metaphorically locate themselves, these works are an invitation for contemplation, mystery and wonder.

This project utilizes prompt driven generative AI. The resulting images are then further digitally altered through both subtractive and additive elements. The poetic prompts are centered around unlikely combinations of scientific concepts, materials, mediums and environmental locations. No living artist is referenced in these works. As physical objects these prints utilize a luminous opalescent paper that creates a remarkable effervescent glow accentuating the sensuality of the jewel-like visual forms.
