Spider-Ball is one in a larger series of speculative video works utilizing generative AI to imagine artful objects, artifacts and installations that are poetic fusions combining metaphysics with empirical science. These speculative objects, or activations, may be plausible but often just beyond our current technological capacity to realize in material form. Spider-Ball is a hypothetical kinetic fiber sculpture inspired by the supple silk threads spun by spiders to protect their eggs from predators. Typically hidden in dark out of the way places, these felt-like egg sacs appear as small white or tan balls, teardrops, or pods. Spider-Ball takes this idea of a resilient organic weaving into the realm of an intelligent self-generating sculptural form that can literally turn itself inside out to transform into a myriad of fiber-based expressions, from lace, to knotted macrame, ethereal silks or ornate hyper-objects based on archetypal sacred geometric form. If one is willing to take the time and dive deep into the process of iterating on a single theme, generative AI, enabled by a rich commanding human imagination, becomes an able tool for exploring the vast possibilities contained within a single visual form. Spider-Ball was originally conceived for outdoor installation and vertical-format architectural projection. This vertical 9:16 format works equally well on a cell-phone screen. The score is a densely layered fluid mix, of field recording, foley sound, and electronic synth textures with additional generative AI prompting of musical gestures, that include both human voices and instrumental phrases. It should be noted that while the use of generative AI yields a rich body of raw material, the actual making of this work was a demanding time-consuming process, requiring a well-conceived foundational concept, consistent design problem solving aptitude, and the core technical knowledge to support advanced film making skills. The combined result fuels the very human thrill of creative discovery.
